Sjöräddare firar i stan

Ålands sjöräddningssällskap fyller femtio år i år och firar bland annat genom att ordna stort internationellt sjöräddningsmöte i Mariehamn.

Ett 50-tal tungviktare i branschen från hela världen är på Åland i dagarna tre för att diskutera internationella erfarenheter vilka bland annat inkluderar hur det känns att rädda 46 förtvivlade syriska flyktingar utanför den grekiska ön Samos men ändå inte kunna nå alla. Två spädbarn och en tonåring dog inför ögonen på de två svenska sjöräddningsbåtar som är på plats i Medelhavet.

Den internationella organisationen International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) undsätter sjöfarande över hela världen och har nu förlagt sitt europeiska möte på Åland. Det är stort.

Minst lika stort är det att det svenska sjöräddningssällskapet kommer till Mariehamn och hyllar det jubilerande Ålands sjöräddningssällskapet med en Rescue Runner värd 35.000 euro.

Det är sådana här organisationer som skapar liv över hela Åland och jag känner mig lyckligt lottad som fick möjligheten att hålla festtalet denna kväll av hyllningar, osjälviskhet och den obändiga viljan att alltid blicka framåt, inte bakåt. Programmet fortsätter i dag i Alandica där krisen i Medelhavet är ett av ämnena tillsammans med exempelvis hur ny teknologi kan användas för att rädda liv till sjöss.

It is a great honour to greet you all welcome to this anniversary dinner for Ålands Sjöräddningssällskap, the Åland Sea Rescue Society. On behalf of the Åland Parliament I would also like to express a sincere welcome to the members of the International Maritime Rescue Federation to the Åland Islands, a self governed part of the republic of Finland with its own government and parliament and ability to make our own laws in different areas.

We alanders are seafarers which might not come as a great surprise. With 6.500 islands to take care of there is a certain need to know how to use a boat. Or how to swim.

Thanks to all our islands and our widespread reality we have developed a great sense of dealing with issues ourselves instead of relying on the government or this guy ”someone” who always should do ”something” but never turns up. When it comes to for example search and rescue at sea and firefighting on shore this ”someone” truly exists on Åland. You see some of them around these tables tonight. They look like the rest of us but they are heroes and living proof that togetherness work. By joining forces between authorities, sea rescuers, fire fighters, dentists, civil servants, chief executives, men, women, farmers, fishermen and common people you all make a difference. And that’s exactly as good as it ever can be.

Shipping and boating is present everywhere in our Åland society. Whatever you will see during your days here is a result of the hard work at sea which we do today and which our predecessors and theirs did long ago as you were told earlier at the seminar. They found their fortune where no-one else did go – out to the horizone and beyond. Åland is a result of the rest of the world and international cooperation.

This year the Åland Sea Rescue Society turns 50 and is stronger and better equipped than ever before. Thanks to people like yourself who truly believes in the beauty of helping others our Society has grown to an organisation that helps hundreds and thousands of people in distress every year. I do not have to explain to you the importance of unselfishness and bravery. You know that much better than me. However I want to emphasize the need for the world of today to act more as volunteers and helpers than in a long, long time. We are in the middle of a crisis that will change our world which is not unique, it has always changed. Tomorrow should never look like today.

Thanks to organisations like the International Maritime Rescue Federation we can do what people have done to each other since the start of humanity. We can help where help is needed. My strongest memory from the seminar today was Rolf Westerströms sort of live update from the refugee disaster in the Mediterranean this afternoon. The yellow boat from the Swedish Sea Rescue Society saved 46 people in the sea close to the cliffs of the greek island Samoa. That’s taking responsibility beyond borders and saving life for real. If the volunteers and the yellow boat had not been there, we could have had 46 less people in the world. Thats rescuing lives for real.

I wish you will take this opportunity during your summit in Åland to meet people you haven’t seen for a while, if ever. Everyone in this room are here by the same reasons as yourself. Because you truly believe in togetherness and the need to prevent loss of life in the waters of the entire world.

In times of challenging public finances I strongly believe that you are role models for all of us. You are giving away your own free time to help others. Thats how humans should act. You are also living proof that cooperation works.
Finally. Enjoy the food and the company, have an inspiring and educational stay in our islands and remember that you are always welcome back. We have many boats to take you here! Enjoy your dinner and happy birthday to the Åland Sea Rescue Society.

I femtio år har Ålands sjöräddningssällskap undsatt sjöfarande i vattnen kring Åland och mot Sverige och Finland och Estland. Själv är jag blott en vanlig styrelsemedlem i ett ovanligt fint sällskap.

Rolf Westerström som är vd för svenska sjöräddningssällskapet berättade vid gårdagens seminarium i Ålands sjöfartsmuseum om hur ”de gula båtarna” räddade 46 personer i Medelhavet. Den storyn blev senare på kvällen viral över hela världen.

Alandiabolagens vd Leif Nordlund höll en välformulerad föreläsning om hur den åländska sjöfarten byggt det åländska samhället, igår, i dag och i morgon.

Mariehamnskvartetten kom (nästan) direkt från New York till Arkipelag och levererade som vanligt en perfekt start för festmiddagen. 

Viking Lines Gunnar Silander hörde till gratulanterna. I bakgrunden sällskapets ordförande Lennart Joelsson och verksamhetsledare Dag Lindholm.

Finansminister Roger Nordlund levererade en hälsning från Ålands landskapsregering tillsammans med  Dan E Eriksson och Niklas Karlman. 

Svenska sjöräddningssällskapets vd Rolf Westerström (i mitten) tog med sig en Rescue Runner till Mariehamn och överlämnade i femtioårspresent till Dag Lindholm och Lennart Joelsson för Ålands sjöräddningssällskaps räkning.

Det var närmare tvåhundra personer som hyllade sjöräddningen i Arkipelags restaurang i går kväll. 

Presentbordet dignade under alla gåvor från till exempel systerorganisationerna i Holland, Norge, Turkiet, Spanien, Danmark, Estland, Sverige, Island och så vidare. Bland gratulanterna fanns även Brändö kommun och Ålands brand- och räddningsförbund.
